ExpressionEngine 1.4 and more
While I may no longer be officially affiliated with pMachine, Inc. (makers of pMachine and ExpressionEngine), that doesn’t mean that I don’t still follow what’s happening and enjoy the products. This week saw the release of ExpressionEngine 1.4, which is a far more significant release than the single point number increase might suggest.
There are tons of new features, but I personally think the most compelling of these are Extensions, the new Relational entry capability, and entry versioning. These all firmly expand both EE’s blogging and CMS capabilities.
A new version and features isn’t the only thing new, though. A new ExpressionEngine Core version of the system was also released and this one is free for personal use. Yes, free. It’s missing a lot of the extra Modules that the full version has (Membership being the most notable one here, I think), and there’s no tech support provided, but it’s still very impressive and should be a great draw for customers. Speaking of pricing, the price for the full personal version was cut by a third, going from $149 to $99, which is pretty impressive in itself. You can find out some more about the reasons behind the new version and price cut.
Overall, very, very impressive.

I didn’t know you were no longer officially part of pMachine.
Yeah, I’m also very impressed with 1.4. I already redid some of my templates to take advantage of the new advanced conditionals, and have started writing my first extension. Unfortunately, Paul tells me I chose a more difficult hook to use, so I may create another one to cut my teeth on.
